More than 55% of South African pork is channelled to the processing sector, which maintain contact with international suppliers of equipment. This results in sophisticated and state-of the art processing plants. All major pork processors comply with HACCP standards. Consumer assurance is guaranteed by strict labelling requirements (containing among others nutritional information) by the South African Department of Health and the South African Bureau of Standards. The South African Meat Processors Association (SAMPA) is the representative body for the processed meat industry. SAMPA promotes the industry, sets industry standards and liaises with various bodies and institutions on behalf of its members. International contact
The majority of international animal health and feed companies, as well as companies providing equipment to the industry, are represented in South Africa. International visits by individual South African producers, as well as organised study tours to all major international meat and pork-related conferences and symposia, ensure that South African producers stay abreast of international developments. |
