Feed industry in line with rest of the world As is the case in other pork producing countries, feed represents the major input cost in South Africa, constituting up to 70% of production inputs. Maize (70%) is the major feed commodity and a large number of South African pork producers (75%) are home mixers. Specifications for feed formulations are in line with international standards. The industry uses good quality raw ingredients and feed efficiency ensures maximum energy output per kg feed fed and carcase quality of the highest standard. As is the case in the rest of the world, the production of biodiesel has resulted in a major increase in feed prices for meat producers. The profitability of pork production in South Africa, as in the rest of the world, is therefore also under pressure. |
